A laser light flash for the creation of colour photograms or shadowgraphs.
A photogram is a photographic image made without a camera by placing objects onto the surface of a light-sensitive material such as photographic paper and then exposing it to light.
Besides its implementation as an artistic medium, variations of the technique have also been used for scientific purposes. For example in shadowgraph studies of flow in transparent media, in high-speed Schlieren photography and in the medical X-ray.

The use of laser light for the creation of these images has the distinctive feature of everything being in focus, regardless of its distance to the photographic paper.
This technique enables, for instance, highly detailed magnifications of short lived chemical phenomena.

First applied in August 2018 for documentation of ER=EPR, an installation by E Domnitch & D Gelfand. The concept was then further developed for a workshop within the framework of Studiotopia art-science programme at VU Amsterdam in September 2022. Followed by the development and construction of a standalone device in 2023.

Because of differences in sensitivity to light between the colour emulsion layers of the photographic paper, the device allows for the adjustment of exposure times for each colour.

STEREODROME   workshop     dec 2022
The workshop was organised by the Open Hardware Academy at TU Delft, who generously provided materials, assistance, advice and access to their facilities.

The workshop featured an introduction by Dmitry Gelfand about flicker phosphenes, the spontaneous appearance of geometric patterns in the visual field when a subject is exposed to diffuse flickering light.
Geometric flicker phosphenes are a prominent occurrence when using the Stereodrome with suitable soundtracks as input.

STEREODROME   presentation     jun 2022
A presentation of the Stereodrome device was organised at iii workspace in The Hague on June 24 2022, in the context of the Obviously Unthinkable series of events.
For this occasion 20 wireless RF Stereodrome devices were produced.

After an introduction to the inspirations for the project and an explanation of its workings, the audience was able to experience the potential of the device through a collection of tracks by some well-known and lesser-known experimental sound artists.

The event also featured a performance of SPECTRES by Robert Curgenven and Kathleen McDowell.

STEREODROME   device     2020 - 2022
Stereodrome is a minimal VR system, which is directly controlled by a stereo audio signal.
A soundtrack is all it takes to produce content for the device.
By presenting each eye with a colourfield interpretation of the corresponding left or right channel of the soundtrack, it offers an absolutely minimalist experience of binocular vision.

The refresh rate of the colours displayed by the device is much higher than that of a regular display. The visual effects perceived through it can therefore not be reproduced with video.

The current release is the first version of a USB viewer.
The viewer can be made from cardboard or 3D printed and requires very few electronic components to be assembled. You do however require a computer and a custom-made software application to operate the device.

The first phase of this project involves the development of a software application with which a soundtrack can be generated for various film or video materials. The software does this by analysing multiple facets of the visual material and sonification of the acquired data.
By algorithmically processing data that is obtained by analysis of the footage, a complexity can be achieved exceeding that which can be accomplished with conventional routines.
Eventually the application will be used to produce compositions in image and sound.
Inspirations for this project are the cybernetic instruments used for the soundtrack of Forbidden Planet (1956) and graphical sound films of the 20th century.

SYNCHRONATOR HD   audio-to-video     jan 2018
The SYNCHRONATOR HD is the latest addition to the SYNCHRONATOR audio visualizer devices.
The device has 3 audio inputs and one video out and adds video sync pulses to your audio, effectively disguising the input as a video signal.
The output signal is HDMI with a resolution of 720p and a refresh rate of 60 Hz.
