At regular intervals, the device projects a bright white square, the
negative afterimage of which is revealed in its wake for a brief
moment in time, and as such only in the mind.
Creating a black square with the absence of light, the installation is
ON when OFF.

Delay Line Memory live set
sep 2014
Through interference between sound waves traveling with divergent
frequencies, infinite rhythmic variations of audible patterns can be
created.
Here, such patterns are temporarily stored within a 'delay line
memory', a form of sequential access memory that was used for early
computing. By delaying the data signal, it is effectively memorised
for a given period of time.
Within the framework of this memory, a two-dimensional visualisation
of its content exposes patterns that otherwise would have remained
hidden.
Supplemented with drums this live set results in improvisations
between drums and digital electronics.

FDBCK AV - Curvilinear
live set & video sep 2014
For the Fdbck AV live sets and releases, Van Koolwijk has created a
feedback control circuit between audio and video data, making these
into two facets of a self-sustaining data stream.
By manipulation of the ensuing processes, the system becomes an
audio-visual instrument.
This version of the live set was especially created for projection
within the Sphaerae dome.
A 12 minutes video with the same title was released in september 2014.
Live performances:
sep 12 2014, Sphaerae, GOGBOT Festival, Enschede NL sphaerae.net

Mercury
to Saturn, including Earth may 2014
98 compositions of flight paths to the planets of our solar system.
An audio-visual installation compiled of scans from a report
commissioned by General Atomic, published in February 1966 as part of
a series of reports examining the possibilities of propulsion by
nuclear explosions for future space travel.
After image analysis, the supplement of Nuclear Pulse Vehicle Study -
Vol. IV appeared to contain some surprising rhythms.
Vertical projection HD, looped, 20 minutes.
The work is to be projected on a custom-built freestanding wall of
which the proportions correspond to those of the visuals.

SYNCHRONATOR
workshop feb 2014
The Synchronator device converts electronic audio signals into
composite video signals. Since its release in 2009, it has seen a
steady growth in the number of users.
During this workshop, we will introduce you to the background,
techniques and use of this device for live improvisation and
recordings.
Each participant is invited to work with the Synchronator devices and
television monitors, ask questions, and engage in hands-on
experiments.
Your instructors: Gert-Jan Prins, Bas van Koolwijk, Tina Frank.
The workshop was organised by Sonic Acts and STEIM within the context
of 'Sonic Acts - Vertical Cinema' on 21 February 2014 at STEIM,
Amsterdam NL. sonicacts.com

SYNCHRONATOR
ColorControl dec 2013
The SYNCHRONATOR ColorControl is a device for mixing two channels of
audio into an RGB Triphonic signal. Its output is to be connected to a
SYNCHRONATOR < audio to video > device in order to create a
composite video signal.
The ColorControl has two controllers for hue and two sliders for
setting the saturation for each input channel. Depending on the hue
and saturation settings, the signal is proportionally divided over the
RGB Triphonic outputs.
Unlike regular audio equipment, which works fine for sound within the
hearable range, the ColorControl can handle frequencies up to 4 MHz
without affecting the quality of the signal.

RUNAWAY AV
sep 2013
In synthetic biology, modular biological functions are used to build
novel biological devices and systems. In this regard, similarities
between the design of biological systems and that of electronic
equipment are quite obvious.
But the most striking difference between the two must certainly be the
fact that the development of a biological system continues after its
construction. It grows.
In this audio-visual performance it is the software that gradually
gains autonomy, resulting in a runaway process whereby the system
continues to develop a growing complexity.
RUNAWAY AV was made especially for projection in the dome of the
Sphaerae project. sphaerae.net

jul 2013
An audio-visual installation based on scans of a complete series of 14
technical data reports from June 1966 to September 1966, commissioned
by NASA. These reports were made in the context of the Apollo program,
in preparation for the lunar landings.
The pages are shown in chronological order of the recorded data as a
looped sequence of 4 minutes.
The systematic approach of the research as evident on consecutive
pages, creates the illusion of movement and gives the individual
reports their own rhythm.
Data obtained by virtual re-scanning of each individual page is
digitally converted to function as a soundtrack.

SYNCHRONATOR ORCHESTRA

SYNCHRONATOR TELERECORDING
I mar 2011
A silent Super8 film production. The film is an investigation into
graphical analysis of sound and SYNCHRONATOR visuals. The title is a
reference to the technique of Kinoscope or Telerecording, once in use
to record television broadcasts onto film.
Commissioned by the VOLSAP foundation, presented during the 'Field of
Ears' concert at MUSYQ, Amsterdam NL on march 13, 2011. www.volsap.nl

SYNCHRONATOR
device (second edition) nov 2010
After the successful launch of the first 100 devices, another batch of
100 go on sale.
The SYNCHRONATOR device transforms your audio into a composite video
signal, compatible with all video equipment supporting composite video
input.
With 3 audio inputs and 1 video out, the SYNCHRONATOR device enables
you to visualize your sounds on each of the primary color channels of
the video signal. It adds video sync pulses and color coding signals
to your audio, effectively disguising the input as a composite video
signal. The device is powered with a 6V adapter and features a
color/b&w switch as its only on-board controller. The second
edition of the SYNCHRONATOR device is again limited to 100 units.
It is shipped in a box with DVD, manual, 6V adapter (US and EU) and
composite video cable.

Optofonica event for Museum Night Amsterdam, november 2010.

SYNCHRONATOR
dual screen - single display oct 2010
Due to technical requirements for performances, a system for 2x video
to 1x WXGA had to be developed.
This resulted in a software application and a combination of specific
video capture devices to establish a fast and reliable method for
placing 2 SYNCHRONATOR video inputs next to each other in one WXGA
output signal. The system adapts to several resolutions and enables
the best possible output quality.

SYNCHRONATOR
automated colour interface mar 2010
A USB device and software application for automated colour adjustment
during SYNCHRONATOR performances.
Through audio analysis, specific peaks and transitions are detected
that are then set to trigger colour changes in the output of the
SYNCHRONATOR device. The colour is changed by automated mixing of the
3 analogue sound signals to the inputs of the SYNCHRONATOR.
The software can be programmed to respond to any detectable changes in
the sound input.
